I live in NJ, work in NYC and am currently taking ASL classes. I meet with some friends to sign a couple times a month, but I'd love to meet some new people.
Also a contact juggler and happy to teach anyone that wants to learn.
Hope to hear from someone!

I want to meet up with other people who are familiar with ASL so that I can practice. I have gone to deaf events, but since I am learning, I have a hard time talking with people. I think it would be great to meet and spend time with other people who are learning the language or are already exceptionally good signers. What do you all think?

ASL get-togethers in PDX?

The only sign get-togethers I've found so far in Portland are on Friday nights or on Saturday, neither of which is good for me.

Do others:
(1) know of gatherings in or very near PDX (esp. Washington Cty) on other days?
(2) have any interest in getting together in PDX/Beaverton area for ASL chat at a coffee place on a Sunday afternoon or a weekday evening other than Friday?

Thanks,
Barbara

Summer ASL Interpreting Course

The Windsor Mountain ASL department is pleased to announce a new partnership with the University of Southern Maine, beginning summer 2008. This collaboration brings a unique opportunity to ASL interpreting students. We are seeking motivated, adventurous interpreting students to participate in a 6-credit experience, based at Windsor Mountain's beautiful campus in NH. Students may apply for one of two categories:

Internship option, which is for students who are just entering their interpreting studies, and will involve more supervision, more teaming, and more one on one.
Practicum option, which is suggested for students further into their interpreting studies, and involves more independent situations, and slightly less supervision.

Both options will have resources and support available at any time, and will receive one on one instruction, videotaping, and feedback from our experienced mentor/teacher. Students will have assigned times to work with more experienced interpreters, and will be able to observe a variety of interpreting situations and registers.

This class involves interpreting for 4 weeks in a variety of
situations, with both Deaf children and adults.

Examples of interpreting situations:

Full staff meetings
One on one meetings with staff and coordinators
Counselor/camper interaction between Deaf/Hearing
Active classes such as soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, sailing, archery, dance, yoga, ropes course, running, etc.
Less active classes such as arts and crafts, painting, costume making, pottery, woodwork, stained glass, jewelry making, etc.
Theatrical productions and music.
In the bunk conversation between Deaf/Hearing bunk mates.
And more…

Nuts and Bolts -

This is a 6-credit class. Students must apply and pass a two-part application process; both an ASL/Interpreting skill screening, and an aptitude screening. There are a limited number of positions
available. Due to funding limitations, we cannot offer the internship without participation in the class. Tuition is mandatory. We do not have scholarships available at this time. We encourage you to seek financial aid from your University summer session office.

The credits are transferable. Most students discuss with their advisor how to apply the credits to their program. Curriculum is available on request.

Internship and Practicum students are on camp from July 20th to August 22nd. This includes a week of orientation. Each student is allowed a 3 day off chunk (assigned) and 2 evenings a week. Students must be willing to commit to this entire interval. Some flexibility is allowed for previous commitments, per the department heads discretion.

For in-state Maine tuition, cost is $1,188.00, plus fees. For out of
state tuition, cost is $3,282.00, plus fees.
Room and board are included.
Students are responsible for their own transportation to NH. We can arrange transportation to camp from local bus/train stations and
airports.

There is a $25 application processing fee.
Applications can be found at: http://www.windsormountain.org/general/jobs.html
Deadline to apply: April 1st
I would love to find people to hang out with and practice. I could do lunch near Belmont, or evenings and weekends a bit further south. ASL Game Night get-togethers, maybe? Anyone interested?

Hi guys, my names Petrina and I just graduated from HS and will be heading to state in a couple of weeks with an intended major in ASL and Deaf Education. The only problem is i'm scared witless, that my two misly years in a less then satisfactory HS sign class have not prepared me enough to meet the rigors of college level sign. I really want to learn sign, so I was wondering if you guys could give me any tips or advice? :)

Cal-Ed an organisation for Deaf Educators

Hi again,

I was looking through the discussion thread and found a lot of refrences and requests for events and organisations so i thought I would contribute my two cents. There is this orginisation known as Cal-Ed, of which i am part, and it caters to all people whos carrers relate to ASL and teh Deaf community in genral with a particular focus on teachers of the deaf. Everyyear Cal-Ed hosts a hugh semminar somewhere in California that hosts work shops regarding culture, education, and whatever issues are important at the time. Like last year, i kid you not, they had workshops for interprtures, work-shops regarding coheliar implants, and hearing aids, they had everything right down to the latest and greatest teaching methods in classrooms., and at the end of all this we heard from a number of prominent speakers including Hanoch McCarty author of Chicken Soup for the Soul. Cal-Ed also host many smaller events through out CA in various locations. I know that when I came back from teh conference my knowledge, confidence and ability in sign was doubled. So anyway i thought that i would share that with you guys and provide you with a link to their sight in case your interested in becoming involved.

I am optimistic at this point that I may learn in time before I lose the rest of my hearing. With wonderful people like her, The world will not go silent for me and my family.

Deaf West Theatre is selling out sleeping beauty wakes and it's an awesome show. The hearies don't sign as well as they did in Big River and the voicing is definitely not as good as Big River but it's still a totally enjoyable show. If you are a hearie bring your ear plugs this is totally a Deaf play, the volume is on max. However Russell Harvard, Alexandria Wailes, Deanna Bray and Troy Kotsur make the show. Deanna Bray as the bad fairy was just fabulous and I fell in love with Russell Harvard as the groundskeeper's son/sleep clinic tech.

So a few weeks ago two of my tribes crossed over in real life: Aikido and ASL.

There is a new girl attending my Aikido dojo, and she is deaf (At first I though she might be hard of hearing because she lip reads so well). It was the first opportunity I had in a long time to actually use my ASL. I was rusty, very rusty, but she understood me and I her. All in all it made for a very cool night.

Any one else deaf or HOH and in the martial arts here?

hello
i really really want to sign but not at some damn coffeehouse, not about the same old shit.
let's get together and revolutionize,

my name is liam and i am hearing but when i sign people think i'm deaf, i guess i'm good at it. 4 years of high school and SCCC sign classes go a ways.
sign is my secret language, but i want to use it much more, it's just that everyone around here is so.. civilized. ew!
deafies, hearies who sign, let's spiral within visual distance and do something.
camping! surrealist social experiments! using sign to express deep meaning, our life perspectives.
we go through the surface and dive down deep!
come with.

Hi, my name is Becca, and I'm a mom with a three year old. We started out learning ASL when he was 10 mos. old and he has been really into it ever since. I'd love it if we could take a class together, or find someone like a private tutor to come and give us a class every week. Any ideas how I can make that happen? I live in the San Mateo area.

signs for coffeehouse vocabulary? (cappuccino, latte, etc)

A barista at a coffeehouse that I frequent in San Francisco recently asked me whether any of the espresso drinks' names have signs... I'd already taught him how to take my order for the usual coffee, yogurt, cookie, "no, don't listen to my kid trying to order soda clandestinely behind my back," that sort of thing. Standard fare. But, no, that's not enough. He wants to know how to sign the fancyschmacy overpriced espresso drinks' names. Latte, macchiato, espresso, so forth.

I don't think there are any signs in ASL for these.... My kneejerk reaction was that his best bet would be Italian Sign Language, but I spent two weeks in Italy with nary a sign of any flying hands, other than the usual melodramatic gesturing, so I can't draw upon that. Google isn't yielding results, either.

Does anyone on here happen to know if there are signs in ASL for the Italian terminology at coffeehouses that I just haven't seen yet? Or do these words already have a set of standard signs in Italy? I feel like I ought to yield to the latter if they do exist, out of respect....

I've a free latte riding on this. Help me out!

As Mortis rightly pointed out, I'm not here often enough to serve as an effective moderator. Would anyone here like to take it over? Prerequisites:

1) Check in at least once a day
2) Ability to stay on top of things
3) Willingness to promote the community, both from within and without
At base, there's nothing to it: We haven't had any flamewars or vandalism, and it pretty much runs itself. However, I suspect a motivated person could make this forum more useful to everyone.

Anyone?

Hi, I am ASL impaired and am wanting to meet new poeple to sign with, hangout with and experience life with. I have no formal training as my current work schedule does not allow for evening or day schooling for asl. therefore I pick up what I can from friends and from books. I need to meet other people that can help this bumbling hearing person learn ASL , because I am tired of hearing.

anyone whom resides in the Hemet/San Jacinto Areas would be greatly appreciated , however, I would love to meet anyone for that matter as well.

Ronald Decker, deaf, and in need of new studio apt. housing. Rent has to be limited to no more than $500 or less, in Los Angeles, and near "Los Angeles City College" (LACC) as he is a medical student there. He is on a limited and fixed income, and would like to be living in a bldg with other deaf tenant's, possibly potential friend's, while doing his own thing and attending school. Please be direct, sweet and to the point in contacting him, please, he is a nice guy, and Ron may be reached at the (following) 3 email address's : dreamyamerica@tmail.com, RONALDDECKER@comcast.net, and dreamyamerica@yahoo.com. He also has Yahoo Messenger as well you can chat with him; I'd think his Yahoo Messenger (name) would be dreamyamerica, not for sure though. Also, his IP address, for video phone : 24.126.15.100, or 70.119.50.76, video phone # : 8086215247. I hope someone who is deaf, or not, basically knows of Los Angeles Deaf Affordable Housing Ron could benefit from. God bless in advance.

ASL interpreters on the playa?

I plan on checking in with BM-related tribes and other sources of info, but I thought I'd also ask here:

does anyone know anything about ASL interpreters being on the playa at Burning Man this year? There's a possible need for a team of good, skilled interpreters who would be willing to volunteer their skills for a hour or two. It might be just half a hour, but it's good to err on the side of caution and expect it to be longer than otherwise, just so there aren't any surprises (other than being done quickly!).

Anyone have any input on where I could look? Or maybe you know someone, who might know someone, etc...?

Thank you!

Sign Writing

I happened across the site http://www.signwriting.org recently, and I found it VERY interesting and helpful. I have some sign, mostly 'contact sign' although i try to lean to the ASL side of things (my work is with deafblind people, however, and full-on ASL relies too much on subtle changes of expression, gaze, etc. for deafblind people to pick up on, so contact sign is the way to go in this context), and am considering taking interpreter training, so the idea of being able to write new signs succinctly without a lot of description or reference to English is really attractive to me. Anyone else have any experience - good or bad - with sign writing?

Galludet President Draws Ire

Susan Kinzie
The Washington Post
Express 02 May 2006

Students at the school for the deaf protest choice of new leader

Washington | The selection of a new president of Galludet University, the nation's only liberal arts university for deaf and hard-of-hearing people, spakred a student walkout and protest Monday at the schools campus in Northeast Washington.

Students objected to the appointment of Jane Fernandes, who is deaf and is currently the university's provost, because she did not grow up using American Sign Language.

Within moments, hundreds of students had blocked the main gates of the campus. Some shouted. Others climbed onto stone fences to sign to the growing crowd. Hands flying in American Sign Language, they roared, "We want to be heard!"

The presidency of Galludet is a position carrying enormous weight for many as the symbolic center of the deaf community.

Fernandes replaces I. King Jordan, 62 who was the first deaf person to lead the 141-year-old school. When a hearing president was name in 1988, a deaf rights movement erupted. Students marched to the White House, the Capitol and the Mayflower Hotel, where trustees were meeting, and demanded a "Deaf President Now".

Although all the finalist for presidency this time where deaf, the selection was still dicisive. Some complained that the board once again was ignoring the campus community; some decried the lack of racial diversity; some wanted what they called a "truly deaf" president, one who grew up without hearing and spoken language.

for the next six months or so.

Are there any tips out there for connecting with the deaf community out in that region? This will be my first time living in the south, and in a city of this size, so I'm interested in taking advantage of any opportunities that there may be in the local d/D community out there.

Thanks!

There soon will be an amazing opportunity of a lifetime for a fluent signer to work with students in arctic Alaska! A certified interpreter would be ideal, but the school district, which I consult for as a deaf education specialist, is looking for a person who is a fluent or near fluent signer to work with three students, mostly young elementary school age, who are deaf. All of them are delightful young people, with good behavior who are eager to sign. Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing applicants are encouraged to apply. For more information, message me.

OK, these have been good convesrations, and keep making me wonder other things.

So, for fluent (mostly fluent) ASL speakers - have you ever gone to other countries, or had people from other countries visit? My curiousity is how "easy" it is for an ASL to understand LSF (French Sign Language), or japanese sign langauge, or indian (hindi) sing language, etc.

The comment on the other board about the need of fluent ASL speakers to interact with non-fluent ASL or even SEE, or other intermediate forms of sign, made me wonder how easy it is for two people of different native sign languages to communicate.

English to ASL cert?

I only learned basic ASL many years ago. I only took a few ASL classes in college, but have managed to retain some vocabulary but not too much of the language itself.

How much time is involved with the ASL interpreting courses towards certification? 2 to 3 years? How does an interpreter actually work? I have a guess to their function, but how do they get requests for interpreting? Is it mainly through schools, courts, some kind of central organization that dispatches interpreters or are interpreters more like private contractors (like a massage therapist or counselor) who hire out part time and still keep another job?

levels of fluency

(not all deaf people sign the same way or with the same fluency).
---
I wanted to start a new thread with this quote, since i didn't want to destroy an important thread about Cirtification.

You know, stupid as this sounds, i didn't really think about the huge complexity Sign Languae is - of issues unique to it.

Any other languae that a person speaks, they do so generally by choice, and always with the ablity of the old language should someone come alone. That is, i may be stranded in France, but if i can find an english speaker, i can resort to my fluent english for a relaxation. AND, i will only use french to teh extent that i need to.

But ALS has a necessity component that necessataes a large collection of non speakers. That is, you have thousands of poeple who become deaf as adults, after being fluent in English. The likelyhood they will ever be truely fluent in ASL is fairly low, just as teh likelyhood you or i would be fully fluent in our 2nd langauge of choice. Yet signing is ultimatly thier ownly option.

so, fluent ASL speakers, as well as translators really would have a unique need to be able to work with a huge variety of people who are attempting to communicate in something "based" on ASL, but which is not yet the language.

That concept just sorta hit me.

Language Disorders Within ASL

I'm a speech-language pathologist working in early intervention (kids 3-5 y/o). I work with children with a variety of communication disorders from mild articulation delays to (relatively) middle-of-the-road language disorders to more globally impacting disorders. A few of my kids are learning ASL or another signing system either as a way to augment their language or because they can't use verbal expressive language (I have a couple of kids with tracheostomies who aren't ready for speaking valves, for instance). I'm new to working with children learning ASL (or another signed language system) as their primary language or primary mode of expressive communication.

I need help finding some information:

*Could someone help me find information (preferably research studies) that detail the typical development in the acquisition of ASL, including the 'typical' errors children make (such as, with hearing children, overgeneralizing the pluralizing process and talking about having two "feets")?
*Are there any studies done on ASL language delays and disorders? I would very much like to be able to better separate what is an expected error from what may be the sign or symptom of a language disorder in my kids.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

ASL Immersion Programs

Does anyone have any experience with ASL Immersion camps or retreats? I've only finished my first semester of ASL, and I'm wondering if I should wait 'til I'm a little more fluent before trying this -- just how much might a beginner get out of it, vs waiting until I had a little more ASL experience.

I've found two that look pretty good:
One in Arizona : http://www.arizonatotalimmersion.com/
and the other near Portland : http://www.wsd.wa.gov/deafedoutreach/tislp2005.aspx

If anyone knows anything about these programs first hand, that would be really helpful.

Hi! I learned ASL in the 90's at a church I was then attending. We had a teacher there and she taught us to sing in sign language. Now I live in a different state and have not used the language at all in years. I'm hoping this group will be an encourgement for me to get back to practicing and maybe help me with ideas on how to put it to use.

I went to see "I Love You, But..." - a love story in ASL and English, at CSD in Fremont last night. It was a terribly corny movie and i sat through to the end with difficulty.

Now i'm looking for more (and high quality) entertainment on video in ASL. Any recommendations? Reviews?

I am creating a website for deaf Native Alaskans. I am a teacher of the deaf here in Anchorage, and would LOVE some accounts of experiences about growing up deaf in the US, including the lower 48. They can either be anonymous, or I would be more than happy to thank you for the quotes. Some questions I want to discuss are:
Your experiences with ASL versus English in School
Body language and miscommunication
Experiences with the cultural differences between Deaf and Hearing people.
Thanks a bunch!

The "how did you come to ASL" thread

Well, that's annoying. There was a big, interesting thread where members of this group discussed why they learned ASL.

One member posted information about herself that she later regretted, and asked for me to remove the post. I told her I couldn't remove a single comment without deleting the entire thread -- which she didn't ask for. We traded a couple more emails about related matters, and left it at that.

Then today I got a note from tribe.net's Terms Of Use person that said:

"[the member] indicated to us that she contacted you to ask that the thread be removed, but you were unwilling to do so."

Then tribe.net deleted the thread.

*muttermutter*

I regret that this one user's short-sightedness has deprived us of our previous posts.

My neighbor is deaf and bored.. I told his mom I would help to try find some acivities for him. I know there used to be an ASL Chat night at Coffee Plantation on Mill in Tempe Does anyone know if that is still going on? Is there anyone on this list who is in the valley and knows about other events where Marc can interact in the deaf community? I have not been as involved in the deaf community since I moved from N. CA to AZ and dont know of other events. SHe was also interested in finding a Chruch in the Chandler, AZ area that is deaf friendly or offers some events.

Any info you guys have would be appreciated.

Automated Closed Captioning

hello all,
I have been asked if I know anything about some of these automated closed captioning (voice recognition) systemns and about which ones work best.

*shrugs shoulders* I've personally never worked on/used or setup anything like this before. So I said I would research it and get back to my father.

This is for my parents church. They are looking for a way to add captions to their church service, which is broadcast on closed circuit television inside the church.

One device is a standalone machine that has input from a microphone of the person speaking it then changes the words to text then changes the text to captioning. Hehehe I have no idea how accurate this thing is or how much "training" of the device is necessary.

The other device is another stand alone box that changes words into text and text into virtual asl. I have only heard of this thing not actually seen it at work so I cant say wether it uses animated human hands to accomplish this or strings loops of pre-recorded signs together.

The purpose of this is to avoid hiring some folks to do the translation every sunday. As is I've never used this technology nor know what is the best for the task and what reasonable costs for this technology are. I've been quoted everywhere from $2700.00 to $5000.00 on these equipments.

I have been told money is not an object. Which makes life easier, but I know that just because something is expensive does not mean that it will work as advertised. So I am soliciting opinions and experiences of folks who have worked with this type of machinery or softwares. So that I may ascertain some performance standards.
Ultimatly it may come down to having each vendor come out and demonstrate their wares each week.

But this is new technology for me so I hope maybe someone here can give me he vocabulary that I need to understand what is desired in functionality.

I am an engineer so it is not the function of the electronics that mystify me. It is my complete ignorance of what is available in this arena.

Maybe some of you who have gone to Vista can help me out. I'm enrolled in ASL 51 and I don't know anything about the campus. I heard it was easy to get to by BART. Is that true? And what BART station? And where is Annex 130?

I have a free morning next week where I'm just going to BART out there to get a feel of how long it takes me to get there from downtown San Francisco.

And let me tell ya, I'm SO NERVOUS about it. I haven't taken ASL in YEARS!

Bay Area - ASL Interpreter Certification?

Does anyone know of a school in the San Francisco/Bay Area that has an ASL interpreter certification program other than Ohlone College in Fremont?

I know there are classes at SF State and SF City College but they only offer the first two semesters of ASL. No official program as far as I can tell.

Hi all. My name is Mo. I am a sign language interpreter, certified, been working 15 years. I recently went live with my website and would love you guys to check it out!

http://yomofo.info

Feel free to share the website address with friends and, by all means, use the comment feature on the blog to make it more fun and interactive! The section most relevant to interpreters is called "mo money: what i do for a living." The site has several features of my non-interpreting life as well: photos, collages, journal, etc.

Thanks in advance for checking it out!

Love,
Mo

I was at a Alannis/Bare Naked Ladies concert last night and there were too women interperting the songs for 2-4 people. It was a beautiful sight. I had to explain to friends what they were doing. When I could see them, I actually picked up more lyrics than listening to the music (being HOH lyrics are tough).

Big River: the Musical

I live in SF and was sorry to miss "Big River" the musical when it was on Broadway, but now it's comign to SF (opening this weekend, playing for about a month).

We're going on Saturday. Anyone else in SF planning on going?

It's based on Mark Twain's "Huckelberry Finn" and it's both sung and signed. The review of the Broadway show I read made it soudn amazing.

As planned, Carrie and I met up at Muddy Waters on Church Street this evening. At first we were worried that we'd be the only ones there... and since neither of us has enough ASL ability to carry on a conversation, we feared a boring evening indeed.

But fortunately others showed up. Noemi took time off from her job to stop by, tell us she couldn't make it, and then go back to work. :) But soon John and Ben showed up, and since they were both conversational, all went well.

We decided to hold the event on the second Tuesday of every month. I hope everyone can make it to the next one!

A last note: One of the participants pointed out some wording in the original invitation that could be interpreted as, "We want to get together and learn ASL away from Deaf people". I sincerely didn't mean to imply this, and think I've taken out the offending phrase. What I meant to say was that I, personally, haven't felt up to the level of Deaf gatherings, and grew to feel like a burden among the more-fluent speakers. (There are only so many times you can say "My name is Tom, I can't understand you", you know?)

Of *course* fluent speakers are necessary for true learning, especially if they're patient and open to the incompetence of people like me. I hope we have more fluent speakers -- Deaf or otherwise -- at future gatherings. Sorry for my part in the misunderstanding.
